Stretch Marks Q & A

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks occur when your skin expands too quickly. The collagen fibers that build up your skin get pulled apart, creating a look that resembles snake tracks or skid marks. Stretch marks tend to be darker or lighter than your healthy skin and may either be raised or indented.

You can get stretch marks almost anywhere in your body if you grow quickly, gain weight, or build muscle. If you have low levels of the hormone cortisone, which makes your skin elastic, you may be especially prone to stretch marks.

Some common areas where you might develop stretch marks include:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Breasts
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms

Stretch marks are a form of scarring, which is why they’re difficult to improve.

Can I use creams to improve my stretch marks?

The drugstore is filled with creams and lotions that purport to help smooth out the look of stretch marks. While topical treatments may temporarily plump up the look of damaged skin, topical treatments can’t fully repair the underlying damaged collagen.

If you want to try a cream or lotion, look for one that contains ingredients that rebuild your skin, such as retinol or vitamin A. However, if you’d like a more dramatic and long-lasting improvement, contact Zweiback Medical Associates for a stretch marks treatment.

How do doctors treat stretch marks?

The Zweiback Medical Associates team uses the Icon laser to break up the damaged collagen that causes stretch marks so that your skin can repair itself through a process called collagen remodeling. As the old collagen is destroyed, your body begins to produce new, stronger collagen and elastin to take its place. The collagen-remodeling process continues for months, as your skin becomes healthier, and the look of your stretch marks improves.

Depending on how severe your stretch marks are, your aesthetic specialist might recommend other therapies to stimulate even more collagen production. Microneedling, microdermabrasion, and intense pulsed light (IPL) work synergistically with the Icon. A skin care system containing retinoids aids in your skin’s repair and continued health, too.

How long does it take to treat stretch marks with the Icon?

Each Icon treatment only takes about 30 minutes. Depending on the severity of your stretch marks, you may need a series of up to three treatments. Over the next weeks to months, your skin looks smoother and more evenly toned.
