If you drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), federal law requires you to undergo a routine examination to assess your physical, mental, and emotional fitness to be on the road for long hours. These exams are officially called the Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Exams but are also known as DOT physicals. After your examination, Dr. Zweiback will issue a medical examiner's certificate that is valid for up to 24 months. However, the certificate can be valid for less than 24 months if you require more frequent monitoring of a health condition, such as high blood pressure or heart issues.
Preparing for the DOT Physical Examination
When you contact us for to schedule an appointment, we will explain in detail the medical records, documents, or appliances you need to bring for the examination. Some of these will include:
- Eyeglasses, contacts, or hearing aids are necessary for drivers with vision or hearing problems. If you have hearing aids, you will need to bring records from your last examination.
- Drivers who take any medications will need to bring the complete list, including the doses and information about the doctor prescribing the medicines.
- Sufferers of Type 2 diabetes need to bring the most recent lab results from their Hemoglobin A1C (HgAIC) test and their blood sugar logs.
- Those with heart-related issues need to, at minimum, bring a letter from their cardiologist that outlines their medical history and current medications that indicate that it is safe for them to drive CMVs.
- Drivers using a CPAP machine for sleep apnea treatment need to bring their latest sleep evaluation.
- If you suffer from any other medical condition, you may need to bring additional information to the examination.
Bringing appropriate documentation can speed your visit and prevent us from having to schedule a follow-up appointment if you are missing any vital information.
Cost of a DOT Physical
